Students on Thursday brandish shields and medieval weapons they created themselves during Key West Art & Historical Society Medieval Camp, an action-filled five day workshop at Fort East Martello that began on January 1. With instructors Rick “Deadeye” Wheelus (far left), Kevin Lisinski (second from right, back row) and Natalie Robinson (far right), using stories of King Arthur, Robin Hood and Charlemagne as backdrops, students engaged in heraldry research, archery, swordplay, shield-making with wood, rope and paint, chain-mail jewelry making, castle-building with blocks, basic siege tactics and a finale competition between the knights of the citadel and the barbarian horde (horned helmets and round shields).
