Special Screening & Director Q&A: Adventures of the Conch Republic
Join us for a special screening of the award-winning documentary Adventures of the Conch Republic, followed by a live Q&A with director J.D. Wilcox of Fearless Film.
In 1982, the U.S. Border Patrol set up a roadblock at the entrance to the Florida Keys, triggering a crisis that threatened Key West’s economy and identity. After a federal judge refused to intervene, Mayor Dennis Wardlow did the unthinkable: he declared Key West’s secession from the United States and founded the Conch Republic.
What followed was one of the most extraordinary – and hilarious – acts of peaceful protest in American history. Armed with wit, imagination, and an unwavering sense of community, the citizens of Key West turned an act of defiance into an international phenomenon that continues to define the island’s independent spirit more than four decades later.
Following the film, stay for a lively conversation with director J.D. Wilcox as he shares behind-the-scenes stories, the remarkable history behind the documentary, and answers audience questions.
Whether you’re a longtime fan of the Conch Republic or discovering its incredible story for the first time, this is an evening of history, humor, and the unforgettable spirit of Key West you won’t want to miss.
