February 19, 2020 – Key West, FL.  Tennessee Williams Film series at Tropic Cinema included in Playwright’s month-long Birthday Celebration  


Film buffs and Tennessee Williams fans will want to note four blockbuster films adapted from Tennessee Williams’ plays which will be presented in March at the Tropic Cinema, 416 Eaton Street, as part of Key West Art & Historical Society’s ongoing Tennessee Williams Birthday Celebration. 


Monday, March 2, 6:30pm – 8:00pm, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof:” This 1958 film was adapted from Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name and was directed by Richard Brooks.  It stars Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, and Burl Ives and was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture.  


Monday, March 9, 6:30pm – 8:00pm, “Baby Doll:” Adapted from Williams’ one-act play 27 Wagons Full of Cotton,” the controversial 1956 film was produced and directed by Elia Kazan  and stars Carroll Baker, Karl Malden and Eli Wallach.  


Monday, March 16, 6:30pm – 8:00pm, “The Rose Tattoo:” Adapted by the Tony Award-winning Broadway play of the same name, the 1955 film was directed by Daniel Mann and stars Anna Magnani and Burt Lancaster. Filmed in Key West, “The Rose Tattoo” offers a unique opportunity to view the island as it appeared during the mid-1950s. Its local premier was held at the San Carlos Institute in 1956. 


Monday, March 23, 6:30pm – 8:00pm, “This Property is Condemned:” Adapted from the 1946 play of the same name, and released in 1966, the film was directed by Sydney Pollack and stars Natalie Wood, Robert Redford and Charles Bronson.  Wood was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture. 


In recognition of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, the Birthday Celebration’s theme this year is “The Women of Tennessee Williams.” Other events include a Sunday, March 1 Tennessee Williams Museum fundraiser; curator-led tours of the award-winning Tennessee Williams Museum located at 513 Truman Ave.; short story, poetry, and plein air painting contests; short story readings at the museum by Fringe Theater; a March 26 Tennessee Williams birthday party complete with contest award presentations, prosecco, and birthday cake to honor the life and accomplishments of the playwright; and special theatrical performances at The Studios of Key West featuring Broadway actors Tandy Cronyn and Joel Vig.
