For generations, women artists have shaped the cultural landscape of the Florida Keys through works that document, interpret, and reimagine the world around them. From a Woman’s Hand celebrates this vibrant creative legacy by bringing together a diverse selection of contemporary artists whose practices span painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, printmaking, fiber, mixed media, and installation.
Presented biennially, this juried exhibition showcases the remarkable breadth of artistic expression found throughout the Florida Keys. Each artist offers a distinct perspective, drawing inspiration from the region’s unique environment, communities, and histories while exploring themes that extend beyond place, including identity, memory, resilience, transformation, and the natural world.
Together, these works reveal the many ways women artists engage with materials, process, and storytelling. Some respond to the fragile beauty of the Keys’ ecosystems, while others examine personal experience, cultural heritage, abstraction, or the complexities of contemporary life. Though varied in medium and approach, the artists are united by a commitment to innovation, craftsmanship, and creative inquiry.
More than a survey of individual practices, From a Woman’s Hand affirms the essential role women play in the cultural life of the Florida Keys. The exhibition provides a platform for both emerging and established artists, fostering dialogue across generations and highlighting the extraordinary creativity that continues to define the region’s artistic community.
Call for Artists
The Key West Art & Historical Society invites women artists who live full-time or part-time in Monroe County, Florida, to submit their original work for consideration in this biennial juried exhibition.
Artists are encouraged to submit work that reflects their individual perspectives, interests, and creative vision. A wide range of mediums is welcome, including painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture, fiber, collage, and mixed media.
Important Dates:
- Submission period opens: Wednesday, November 4, 2026
- Submission deadline: Wednesday, January 6, 2027
- Accepted artwork delivery: Monday, February 15, 2027, by appointment
- Opening reception: Friday, February 19, 2027, from 5–8 p.m.
- Exhibition dates: February 19 – March 28, 2027
The entry fee is $20 per artist, with one artwork permitted per artist. Eligible works must be original, created within the past three years, and not AI-generated. First Place, Second Place, and Honorable Mentions will be awarded; no monetary prizes are offered.
The exhibition will be juried by Dr. Cori Convertito of the Key West Art & Historical Society, Christina Joy of the Key West Art Center, Carole Garcia of the Anne McKee Artists Fund, and Elena Devers of The Studios of Key West.
