Two Hour Historic Harbor Tour with Florida Keys Historian Brad Bertelli on the S/V Argo Navis talking about An Almost Industry: Commercial Sponge Farming in the Lower Keys
On Saturday, January 17, Bertelli will lead a historically illuminating morning seafaring excursion presented by Key West Art & Historical Society aboard the luxury catamaran S/V Argo Navis, departing from the dock at Sunset Pier, adjacent to Ocean Key House at 0 Duval Street at 10:00am and returning at 12:00pm.
Passengers will enjoy Bloody Marys, mimosas or non-alcoholic beverages along with a variety of pastries as Bertelli shares how the discovery of sponges in the Florida Keys rivaled the Mediterranean sponge market. The industry’s success inspired the the idea of growing sponges like a crop of pineapples or limes. Bertelli will explore the ups and downs of the early experiments and the rise and fall of the Florida Keys Sponge and Fruit Company.
