The Key West Art & Historical Society is excited to offer a series of fun historical lectures entitled ‘Happy Hour with the Historian’.

Historian: Cori Convertito Ph.D.

Topic: The Florida Keys on Screen: Film, Tourism and Tropical Fantasy

From classic films to hit TV shows, the Florida Keys have long captured the imagination of audiences around the world. This lecture explores how the islands have been portrayed on screen, sometimes as a tropical paradise, sometimes as a gritty hideaway, and often as a place where the rules of the mainland no longer apply.

We’ll look at famous movies and shows filmed in or inspired by the Keys, including Key Largo, License to Kill, True Lies, and Netflix’s Bloodline.  Through clips and conversation, we’ll see how filmmakers use the Keys’ stunning scenery, colorful culture, and mysterious past to tell stories of adventure, crime, romance, and escape.

This talk will also explore how these screen portrayals have shaped public perception, fueled tourism, and helped create the legend of the Keys as America’s island outpost – laid-back, untamed, and endlessly fascinating.  Whether you’re a film buff, a Florida history fan, or just love the Keys, this lecture offers a fun and insightful look at how the islands became stars in their own right.
