4th of July Cafe
Postcard
Postcard depicting a Mario Sanchez woodcarving of a man with a wheelbarrow on a street. Signs on the buildings read, ‘Cheche Rosendo’s Meat Market; Banana House; I’d walk a mile for a Camel; 4th of July cafe, pool room and barber shop, club in rear’. The description on the verso reads, 'Mario Sanchez. "4th of July Cafe" - 1964 - Painted Woodcarving. This popular Key West cafe (where the cafe or club was in the rear and pool room and barber shop in front) was on Duval Street between Petronia and Angela Streets (east side). Later it became a furniture store, and in 1964 was the El Paso Restaurant. Adjacent (not in carving) was the office of R. Gomez, Justice of Peace. Mario Sanchez, as a boy, pitched for the R. Gomez Baseball Team (1926), which was considered the best baseball team in south Florida. Gomez furnished the uniforms, Sanchez was manager. The Camel Cigarette sign in this carving was a familiar one in the early days of the 1900's. And the small meat markets and buildings where bananas were hung to ripen, served the then small community plentifully. Collection "El Kiosko", Key West, Florida.'
