Public Programs & Volunteer Coordinator

Position Overview:

The Public Programs & Volunteer Coordinator (PPVC) is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing adult programs and volunteer initiatives at the Key West Art & Historical Society (KWAHS).  This role plays a key part in advancing the organization’s mission by offering engaging, educational experiences for adult audiences and cultivating a dedicated volunteer corp.

Adult programs include lectures, classes, tours, workshops, and special events designed to deepen public engagement with KWAHS’s exhibitions and historic sites.  The PPVC leads all aspects of the organization’s volunteer program, with a focus on recruiting, training, scheduling, and retaining a diverse and enthusiastic volunteer corps.  Volunteers serve in critical capacities including museum docents, front-line ambassadors, program assistants, and event support staff.

Occasionally, the PPVC will collaborate with the Education Specialist to support youth programming and outreach efforts.

Core Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement and evaluate mission-driven adult educational programs
  • Maintain and analyze program data to inform planning, assess impact, and support grant submissions.
  • Create, manage, and monitor the annual department budget.
  • Schedule and lead group tours for adult audiences
  • Collaborate with the Curator to expand interpretive and educational opportunities related to exhibits.
  • Coordinate program scheduling with other departments to ensure alignment and provide support for cross-departmental initiatives as needed.
  • Review, strengthen, and expand the docent program across all museum sites
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and retain a volunteer base to support daily museum operations and public programs.
  • Coordinate with Marketing & Public Relations staff to promote programs and volunteer opportunities.
  • Support outreach efforts to the Monroe County School District in collaboration with the Education Specialist.
  • Assist with the delivery of youth education programs as needed.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, museum studies, history, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred. Equivalent work experience will be considered.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Working knowledge of Florida history, museum pedagogy, and best practices.
  • Must be able to effectively multi-task in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as required by the programming schedule.
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and use of audiovisual equipment for program delivery.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to lift, move or carry up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
Schedule & Compensation:

This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits. The role is based on a 40-hour work week, though regular evening and weekend hours are required to support programs and events.
Starting salary is in the low $50k, but will commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Key West Art & Historical Society is hiring Maintenance Staff!

Maintenance staff are responsible for the security, cleanliness, general maintenance and appearance of the Society’s four facilities and their grounds. This includes the Key West Museum of Art & History, Lighthouse & Keeper’s Quarters Museum, Fort East Martello and Tennessee Williams Museum. Responsibilities include ensuring all systems (i.e. mechanical, plumbing, electrical, etc.) are in proper working order, minor landscaping, repairs, event support, exhibition changeover, and ground keeping.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance checks for all systems; coordinate repairs with vendors as needed
  • Maintain museum grounds to ensure they are presentable to guests
  • Maintains cleanliness of gallery spaces, offices, and public areas
  • Monitor buildings and grounds to identify and resolve issues
  • Ensures all restrooms are clean and adequately stocked
  • Keeps maintenance areas clean and well-organized
  • Works with Curator during exhibition installation
  • Assist with event setup and breakdown assuring
  • Assist with storm preparedness and cleanup

Minimum Education Requirement Qualifications

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) or comparable work experience
  • Must be able to carry and lift heavy objects (50 lbs), stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to satisfactorily complete a background check
Position Type Schedule:

Full-time, hourly with benefits
