The Key West Art & Historical Society is excited to offer a series of fun historical lectures entitled ‘Happy Hour with the Historian’.

Historian: Cori Convertito Ph.D.

Topic: Jefferson B. Browne: Statesman, Historian, and the Evolution of Key West

This lecture explores the life and legacy of Jefferson B. Browne (1857–1937), a Key West native who played a central role in Florida’s political and legal landscape during a period of major change. A lawyer, historian, and public servant, Browne held positions ranging from city and county attorney to state senator, chairman of the Florida Railroad Commission, and chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court.

In addition to his public service, Browne authored one of the earliest histories of Key West, published in 1911—a valuable account of the island’s past still referenced today. He was also a regular contributor to legal and literary journals, reflecting his deep engagement with both civic life and cultural preservation.

This talk will highlight Browne’s influential career while examining how his work reflected and shaped the broader transformation of Key West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
