VIRTUAL Happy Hour with the Historian | Sinking of the U.S.S. MAINE

7-October from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM

The Key West Art & Historical Society is excited to offer a series of VIRTUAL fun historical lectures entitled ‘Happy Hour with the Historian’.

Historian: Cori Convertito Ph.D.
Topic: The Sinking of the U.S.S. Maine

On September 17, 1895 the battleship U.S.S. Maine was commissioned into the U.S. Navy. Her introduction to the U.S. Navy came at a crucial time. Cuba was embroiled in a revolution against the Spanish government attempting to gain its independence.

With tensions heating up in Cuba, the Maine was ordered to Key West in December 1897, drawing uneasiness from the American public who wondered if war was looming. Under the command of Captain Charles D. Sigsbee, the battleship docked in Key West, much to the delight of the island’s residents who had concern for their safety should war break out a mere 90 miles away.
