Topic: The Life of Rome Dupont: Freedom in Key West

Rome Dupont and Amanda Shackleford were born into slavery.  Bought and sold, they found each other and began a family while enslaved in Hillsborough County, Florida.  In 1863, Emancipation freed the Duponts, and they made their way to Key West to make a new life of liberty for themselves and their children.  Joining hundreds of others here, their new lives changed the culture of the island city.  Come hear a compelling story of transformation, hope, and courage.
