The Key West Art & Historical Society is excited to offer a series of fun historical lectures entitled ‘Happy Hour with the Historian’.
Historian: Cori Convertito Ph.D.
Topic: The Eighth Wonder of the World: Building the Overseas Railway
They said it couldn’t be done. They called it ‘Flagler’s Folly’. Construction of the Overseas Railway was one of the largest engineering feats the world has ever seen, and it was accomplished by Henry Flagler in 1912. It connected Key West to mainland Florida for the first time, opening up the economy of the island, as well as the opportunity for its residents to quickly get luxury items from the United States, Europe and the Americas.
The talk features a detailed look into the construction of the Overseas Railway, focusing on the grueling task of construction and the jubilation at its completion.
