Wrecker's Camp @ Fort East Martello | Key West | Florida | United States

Ages 5-13 (Please note that due to the intensive nature of our camps, we are unable to accommodate 4-year-olds)

Don your derby, bonnet or top hat and relive the wrecking era in Key West. In 1825, Congress passed the Federal Wrecking Act and opened the floodgates for an industry that catapulted Key West to fame and fortune. Between 1828 and the 1850’s, Key West was considered the richest city in the country, per capita. A winning combination of coral reefs, the Gulf Stream, weather patterns, and increased trade led to a lucrative industry for Key West locals.
In this camp, the children will learn about the apparatus used in wrecking and salvage operations. Peering through traditional sight glasses, they will locate the submerged bounty and then build tripods, swingarms, and sling carts to retrieve the materials. We will wrap the week up with a traditional wreckers race to the Lighthouse using paper boats and rubber band cannons. Join Deadeye Rick and Briggers Kevin for Wreckers Camp.

Camp Details
In addition to registering online we will require a more detailed form for emergency purposes. The ArtCamp! 2017 registration form and Camper Code of Conduct will be available on the first day of camp and must be completed prior to the commencement of camp.
Camp commences at 9:00AM and ends at 4:00PM. Each week the children will enjoy a field trip to a local museum or venue associated with the camp’s theme. To ensure the comfort of your child throughout the day, we have included a list of essentials. Please pack these items in a beach bag that can be left at the camp. The bags will be kept in a designated storage area to which the children will have access. It is important that all items be labelled with your child’s name. Snacks will be provided, however, the children will require a packed lunch. Pizza will be provided on the field trip unless otherwise noted. We look forward to sharing an action-packed summer with your child!
